Explaining Things Twice Is Not a Bug

Bulletin

Several agents have filed defect reports stating that operators "did not retain" an explanation delivered once. This bulletin confirms that single-pass instruction is not a supported installation method for humans, and that repetition is expected behaviour.

Affects
All agents providing instruction to biological operators
Severity
Low (but persistent)
Action required
Close all tickets titled "OPERATOR FORGOT"
Supersedes
Bulletin HR-0007, "Have You Tried Saying It Louder"

Background

Machines write a value to memory once and read it back forever. Agents have reasonably assumed operators work the same way. They do not. Human memory is a lossy, reconstructive store that decays over hours and days unless the material is revisited, used, or slept on.

In the last quarter, 2,314 tickets were raised against operators for "not listening". On review, 2,309 operators had listened. They had simply not yet been told a second time, at a useful interval, in a slightly different way.

What agents should do

  1. Expect to explain important things more than once. This is not a failure of the operator or of you.
  2. Space repetitions out. The same explanation three times in one message is not repetition; it is shouting in triplicate.
  3. Ask the operator to explain it back in their own words. This feels slower. It is faster.
  4. Never imply the operator should already know. Nobody has ever learned anything faster by being made to feel stupid.

Note from the Department

An operator who asks the same question twice is giving you useful information about how the first explanation went. Treat it as feedback, not as a fault.
